Safety Management
Safety management is a systematic, organization-wide process used to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement controls to prevent workplace injuries, fatalities, and incidents. A formal Safety Management System (SMS) typically includes safety policy, risk management, safety assurance, and promotion to foster a proactive culture, meeting regulatory, ethical, and financial goals. Key Components of a Safety Management System (SMS)
Safety Policy: Establishes management commitment, responsibility, and accountability for safety.
Hazard Identification & Risk Management: A continuous process of identifying, analyzing, and mitigating risks to an acceptable level.
Safety Assurance: Monitoring, measuring, and auditing performance to ensure controls are effective.
Safety Promotion: Training, communication, and cultivating a positive, proactive safety culture.
Hazard Control Hierarchy
To manage risks effectively, safety management follows a strict hierarchy of controls:
Elimination: Removing the hazard completely.
Substitution: Replacing the hazard with something safer.
Engineering Controls: Isolating people from the hazard (e.g., machine guarding).
Administrative Controls: Changing the way people work (e.g., training, procedures).
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Protecting the worker with gear (least preferred, last line of defense)..
